Red Clover | Red clover is a relatively short
lived
perennial that tolerates wet soil conditions and lower pH soils than
alfalfa. Well suited for use in mixtures with both forage grasses and
other legumes, red clover can be used for hay, pasture or ensilage.
Tri-an brand red clover is an improved, persistent (3 to 4 years),
double cut red clover with resistance to anthracnose and downy mildew. |
|
White Clover |
White clover has a prostrate growth habit and is a great companion
species for most other legume and forage grass species making it an
ideal component of pasture mixes. Stolon development (the ability to
produce a new plant at the point where a stem contacts the soil surface)
gives white clover the ability to persist in the pasture environment.
Will ladino white clover is a large leafed type that possesses good cold
tolerance with excellent stolon development. Resolute white clover has
aggressive stolon development with outstanding persistence and long term
forage production. |

Timothy |
Timothy can be grown alone or, more commonly, in mixtures with other
forage grasses and legumes. Timothy is shallow rooted and produces
corms, underground storage bulbets, that help it survive through
difficult winters and even ice encasement. Forage production in timothy
occurs primarily in the cooler months with the majority of the forage
being produced in the spring, little in the summer and some in the fall.
HI-TEX brand timothy is an early-medium maturity timothy suitable for
pure stands and ideal for timothy/alfalfa mixtures. It has been
developed for improved yield and disease resistance. Tribune brand
timothy is a medium to early maturing timothy. |
| Smooth Bromegrass |
Smooth bromegrass is a relatively
shallow rooted, sod forming grass that produces rhizomes similar to
bluegrass. It is excellent for use in pastures and can also be used in
waterway drainage areas. If used as hay, smooth brome should be cut to a
minimum of 4 inches as regrowth occurs primarily from the stem and the
growing point is relatively high. Peak smooth bromegrass is a propriety
variety developed for improved forage yield, disease resistance and seed
size. Belmont brand is a proven product with solid overall performance
in haying or grazing management programs. |
|
Orchardgrass |
Orchardgrass is a high quality, relatively deep rooted grass with
good winter survival. Protein levels can exceed 20% but decline
rapidly after head emergence. Orchardgrass can be used alone or in
mixtures with other forage grasses and legumes for hay, pasture or
ensilage. Empire brand orchardgrass is early maturing with excellent
persistence and disease resistance. Liberty brand is later maturing
with persistence, disease resistance and good quality. The later
maturity makes it ideal for use with alfalfa. |
| Tall Fescue |
Tall fescue has the most extensive and deepest root system of the cool
season forage grasses giving it the ability to withstand extended
periods of drought. It will have the best forage production during
summer months and can be used for stockpiling as it retains good forage
quality after a killing frost in the fall. Managed properly, forage
quality is also excellent. Select tall fescue is low endophyte making it
safe for all animals. With excellent yield, disease resistance,
persistence and forage quality, Select is a proven performer. |
| Reed Canarygrass |
Reed canarygrass forms sod via small rhizomes and can tolerate both
drought and long periods of water logging. It is slow to establish, but
is extremely persistent after establishment. Reed canarygrass can be
used for either hay or pasture and, while coarser than other cool season
forage grasses, can produce high quality, palatable forage with proper
management. Marathon reed canarygrass is a low alkaloid (increases
palatability) high yielding FS exclusive variety. |
| Kentucky bluegrass |
Kentucky bluegrass is a relatively short growing grass which forms
excellent sod and footing for pastured animals. Widely adapted, Kentucky
bluegrass tolerates close mowing and grazing well, produce good forage
quality when used at young growth stages. Troy Kentucky bluegrass is
specifically designed to meet the demands of grazing animals. |
| Ryegrass |
Ryegrass is the highest quality of the cool season grasses and is short
lived. Perennial ryegrass can be used in either pasture or hay mixes, is
quick to establish and can persist for 2 to 4 years depending on
management and the environment. Perry brand perennial ryegrass is a
tetraploid ryegrass with high quality, forage yield and disease
resistance. Annual ryegrass is sometimes used as a nurse crop at low
seeding rates because of its rapid establishment. It is also suitable as
an emergency summer crop due to rapid development. Venice brand annual
ryegrass establishes quickly and has good yield, disease resistance and
quality. |
| Birdsfoot Trefoil |
Birdsfoot trefoil is a non bloating legume that retains its leaves and
is tolerant of wet soils. An excellent component of one or two cut hay
management or pasture mixes, birdsfoot trefoil will reseed itself
naturally. Pardee trefoil is a proprietary upright variety selected for
resistance to Fusarium root rot and other root diseases. Norcen trefoil
is a winter hardy variety with an intermediate growth habit. |
| Teff |
Teff is an annual forage grass with extremely rapid establishment and
growth and regrowth. Best suited for hay or green chop, the first teff
crop can be harvested about 55 days after planting with the regrowth
harvested in as little as 45 days. For optimum regrowth, teff should be
cut no lower than 4 to 6 inches. |
